Online Rowing newsletters just published

Just got this email from Rachel Quarrell

Apologies for the delay - bad timing and computer problems have made this issue a little late.  We intend to keep to the rest of the schedule, so the next issue (2:4) will be a week after the World Cup, with a focus on the action in Germany plus any urgent news, letters, adverts and stories that need to be included.

Anyway, vol 2 issue 3 is now online, and full of choice pieces to keep you occupied.  A big feature on lower back pain and how to prevent it, and a discussion of the skills rowers need in their sport.  Racing, overseas and domestic UK news, results, pictures, and a few new ideas.

Thanks to everyone who has subscribed for their support, and we hope you enjoy the latest Voice.

RQ & CD

To see the current issue and subscribe (it's a mere £20 per year) go to the Rowing Voice website

And the World Rowing newsletter published by FISA is out too.

Ever wanted to tell the ARA what you REALLY think?

I've been invited to chair a panel for Sport England and Channel 4 at their "All Together Now - sports, community and the web" event on 1 May.

Now this really gets me excited.  Many of you know that I write a this blog , I still compete and am involved on the committee of a big rowing race.  This is a perfect place for my passion and my business to intersect.

Here's what the event is about.

Over the course of the past three years the emergence of blogging, social networking services and platforms which showcase and share user generated content have transformed the possibilities of how we connect, converse and collaborate with one another.
’In the 20th Century, we were defined by what we owned, in the 21st Century we will be defined by what we share and give away’ Charles Leadbeater, author of "We Think"

The potential for organisations and brands to harness these technologies and tools to engage with users, customers and their communities in radically new ways is becoming clear.

How can all those organisations working to promote active participation in sports and the brands that wish to sponsor their activates and campaigns work together to make the most of the unrivalled viral power and network effects of the web in the run up to 2012?

All Together Now will bring together leading social media developers and thinkers, sports governing bodies, communities’ sports organisations and some of our leading brands into a unique event to explore these opportunities.

Now, can you guys put your thinking caps on and tell me what questions you think I should be asking the panel members?

What would be a 'perfect' social media outcome for London 2012?

How would you ideally like to engage online with the ARA and the folk who run the sport?

Where do you go currently to talk about your sporting interests?  (online and offline).
Spread the word.... let's get some REAL answers for the ARA and make the online rowing community take a leadership position in this opportunity.

New Rowing bloggers

Rowing for Pleasure by Chris Partridge
Malvern Rowing - a US boys school rowing team (the head coach, Craig Hoffman, was interviewed by Rowperfect after the HRR last year)
Milton Keynes Rowing Club - glad they are early on the website which is great for a fairly new club!

The Rows City by Thom from Portland Oregon, USA

and Unoffically Thames Rowing Club which has some posts passworded  (to protected the innocent?)

Small Experiences a British lady down south, gamely staying anonymous!

Rowing Voice issue 2

I encourage all rowing enthusiasts who want to support an independent press to go to download Rowing Voice issue 2.
You need to subscribe, and it's pretty good value.  Last I heard from Chris Dodd, they have over 100 subscribers.... help boost that figure and start a REAL conversation within our sport that isn't (quite so) censored  edited.

The Boat Race from the Umpire's POV

A nice, unusual, interview with a Boat Race Umpire on the Londonist site.

Simon Harris has been both a competitor and an umpire in the past.  On Saturday he was the 'reserve' umpire whose job was to follow the race in a launch and be ready to step up and take over should the Umpire's launch fail of he become unable to complete the task [interesting thought!]

I should declare an interest.... I set up the interview.  And by happy chance met Simon on race day on the Embankment.

Will put up my probably appalling photos later on... I was privileged to be on a launch following the Isis / Goldie race. [Simon is on the Right and on the left is Will Dawkins from the 1978 crew that sank and was featured on ITV's pre-race build-up]

Old controvosy dogs Boat Race

blimey won't they let old news die?  The Telegraph has raked up the story about Thorsten Engelmann walking out on his degree for their sports blog page...

Following yesterdays 5 mishaps posting... which maybe is why people continue to watch the race - it has mishaps!

so I wrote a comment.....

Boat Race news...

Boat race fun - discussion on RSR about GPS and exactly how far the Boat Race Course is on Google Maps and discussion on weather ... and other trivia!

Boat Race on US TV and some fun about the exact time of the race given that US is already on Summer Time and over here we aren't.... yet!

Cambridge subsitution news from Telegraph
and Oxford President Nick Brodie mis-quoting himself about whether he thinks he is certainly sure about this being his last boat race

"I said last year it would be my last one but this will probably be my last," he said.

Interesting that he says it must stay true to it's Student Roots.  What does that mean?  Undergraduate?  If so, Oxford stand to lose out more than Cambridge as it has many more 1 year courses on offer and more single year post-grads who turn up to row for the University than Cambridge does.... could re-balance the swings significantly.  Cambridge's development programme will see them much stronger if it does move back to being an undergraduate event. [but it probably won't].

An excellent article on the BBC website by Martin Gough - be sure to read the comments at the end too
